中央部が甲高の蓋が伴う端麗な印象の青白磁杯です。北宋期、11世紀末〜12世紀頃に景徳鎮で焼かれたものです。至ってシンプルながらバランスの良い造形で、持つ手が透けて見えるほどに薄作りとなっています。釉薬は透明度が大変高く、蓋の鈕周辺や外縁部、身の腰辺りには美しい青色の釉溜まりが見られます。
本作のように薄手の青白磁が作られる要因として、景徳鎮周辺の土が優れていることがあげられます。カオリンを多く含む良質な磁土だからこそ、極限まで削り込んだ薄く優美な造形が崩れることなく焼き上がるのです。
本作は、中国陶磁のコレクターとしてよく知られるFrancis Brodie Lodge (1880〜1967年)とその妻Enidの旧蔵品で、彼らも会員となっていたOriental Ceramic Societyが1935〜1936年にRoyal Academy of Artで開催した「中国芸術国際展覧会（International Exhibition of Chinese Art）」に本作を貸出していたことがそのカタログから確認されます。
